Insurance & loans
Same coverage. Lower price. Less hassle.
Insurance prices change at every renewal, and staying put isn't always the cheapest option. Here's how to shop around without ending up with worse coverage.
Step by step
How to do it yourself
- 01
Find your declarations page
It lists your coverages, limits and deductibles, and you'll need it to compare quotes fairly. It's usually in your insurer's app or in your renewal emails.
- 02
Get quotes for the same coverage
Ask a few insurers to quote identical limits and deductibles. A cheaper quote with less coverage isn't really a saving.
- 03
Ask about discounts
Common ones include bundling home and auto, safe driving, low mileage, paying in full, paperless billing and home security devices. Ask your current insurer too.
- 04
Review your deductibles
A higher deductible lowers your premium but means paying more if you make a claim. Pick one you could comfortably cover.
- 05
Switch without a gap
Start the new policy before you cancel the old one, and have the old one end the same day. A gap in coverage can raise future prices, and driving uninsured is illegal in nearly every state.
- 06
Check loans and credit cards too
If your credit has improved since you took out a loan or card, you may qualify for a lower rate. Ask your lender, or compare offers before refinancing.

FAQ
Common questions.
How often should I shop for car insurance?
A good habit is at every renewal, and after big changes like moving, buying a car or adding a driver.
Will getting insurance quotes affect my credit score?
Insurance quotes generally use a soft credit check, which doesn't affect your credit score.
Can I switch insurance before my policy renews?
Usually, yes. Most insurers refund the unused part of your premium, though some charge a cancellation fee. Check your policy first.
