You can cancel a Planet Fitness membership three ways: online through the member portal at planetfitness.com, in person at your home club, or by mailing written notice to your home club. To stop your next monthly charge, Planet Fitness says the club must receive your request at least 8 days before your next billing date.
Before you cancel: get your dates and details
A couple of minutes of prep can save you an extra charge.
- Find your billing dates. Log in to the member portal at planetfitness.com (or check your membership agreement). Note your next monthly billing date and your annual fee date.
- Know your home club. Cancellations go through your home club, which is usually where you signed up or where you transferred your membership.
- Check for a minimum term. Some memberships come with a contract term. Planet Fitness's FAQ currently says that if your membership has a minimum term and you end it before the term is up, a $58 buyout fee is required. Your agreement will tell you whether this applies to you.
- Have your member info handy. Your name, email, and the details on your PF Club Pass make things faster, whichever method you choose.
Option 1: Cancel online through the member portal
Planet Fitness lists its online member portal as one of the official ways to end a membership.
- Go to planetfitness.com and select My Account to sign in.
- Look for your membership settings and the option to end your membership.
- Follow the prompts to submit your request.
- Save the confirmation. Take a screenshot and check your email.
Planet Fitness notes that some policies and procedures vary by location based on state and local guidelines. If you don't see an option to end your membership online, use one of the other two methods or contact your home club.
Option 2: Cancel in person at your home club
- Visit your home club and tell the front desk you'd like to end your membership.
- Complete whatever form or step they ask for.
- Ask for written confirmation, like a receipt or an email, before you leave.
This is often the fastest option if your billing date is coming up soon, since you're handing in your request directly.
Option 3: Cancel by mail
- Write a short letter. Include your full name, address, phone number, the email on your account, and a clear sentence saying you are requesting to end your Planet Fitness membership. Date it and sign it.
- Mail it to your home club's address. You can find it on the club's page at planetfitness.com.
- Consider certified mail with a return receipt. That gives you proof of when the club received it, which matters because the deadline is based on when the club gets your notice, not when you send it.
- Keep a copy of the letter and your mailing receipt.
Timing: how to avoid one more charge
Planet Fitness spells out its deadlines in its customer service FAQ:
- Monthly dues: the club must receive your request at least 8 days before your next billing date. It can take up to 7 days for billing changes to take effect.
- Annual fee: your request must reach the club at least 8 days before your annual fee date.
If you're cutting it close, cancel online or in person instead of mailing a letter, so the request arrives in time.
Tips and gotchas
- Moving? You might not need to cancel. Planet Fitness lets eligible members transfer to a different club online. Its FAQ says you're eligible to transfer online if you're not a minor, have been a member for at least 90 days, haven't transferred in the past 90 days, don't owe dues or fees, and are on a monthly billed membership.
- Downgrading is different. If you want a cheaper tier rather than canceling, Planet Fitness says to stop by your club.
- Watch your next couple of statements. Many Planet Fitness clubs bill through your checking account. If a charge shows up after you canceled, contact your home club first with your confirmation.
- Know your bank options. For automatic payments from a bank account, the CFPB says you can tell the company you're revoking permission and then tell your bank too. Federal rules also let you stop a preauthorized payment by notifying your bank at least three business days before it's scheduled (banks generally charge a fee for this). Stopping a payment doesn't cancel the membership itself, so do both.
- Billing questions: Planet Fitness says your home club is the best place to start. If your club is closed, its Member Services team is available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern.
